Welcome to ICD’s Human Services, Direct Support Professional Class

ICD’s Human Services vertical offers an innovative training program where people with disabilities can earn industry-recognized skills and certifications. The Direct Support Professional program is a five-month, hands-on training that prepares students for employment in paraprofessional positions to support individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities by teaching them how to build trusted relationships, promote the health and safety of their clients, and apply a person-centered approach to a client’s well-being. The program includes accessible classroom instruction, hands-on activities, work readiness training, a pathway to CPR and Mandated Report (Identifying and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect) certifications, and connection to employment opportunities. Key Components of the Program

An Accessible Curriculum that has been adapted for different learning styles in a physically accessible environment that includes adjustable desks and computers, ergonomic peripherals, noise-canceling headphones, eye-tracking devices, screen readers, and real-time voice transcription. It is tuition-free for qualifying students.

Work Readiness workshops and one-on-one coaching to address topics such as resume development, cover letter writing, networking, mock interviews, and workplace etiquette.

Real-World Experience through internship placements.

Certifications, including CPR and a Certificate of Completion (Coursework/Training) in Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment, both of which are professionally recognized in the human services field.

Connections to Employers through one-on-one work with Employment Specialists who create individualized career plans and help graduates secure career-track jobs.

Eligibility

You may qualify if you:

  • Are a New York State resident

  • Have a documented disability

  • Are unemployed or underemployed

  • Have an 8th grade reading and writing level on TABE

  • Have a 6th grade math level on TABE

  • Have a High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Have excellent emotional maturity, responsibility, and ability to tolerate stress

  • Are able to commit to the five-month training without missing a class

  • Are legally authorized to work in the U.S.A.

About the Direct Support Professional Training

Direct Support Professionals are needed in a variety of settings, including small community residences, day programs, private homes for individuals with disabilities, employment settings, and in the community.

The need for professionals who are compassionate, adaptable, and reliable supporters to individuals with disabilities who seek to live independently, engage in their communities, and improve their overall quality of life is high.

In the program, students build foundational knowledge through hands-on learning in the following areas:

  • Self and Cultural Awareness

  • The Role of the Paraprofessional

  • Working with Groups

  • Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

  • Mental Health

  • Interviewing and Communication Techniques

  • Case Management and Understanding Client Rights

  • Customer Service and Ethical Practice

  • First Aid, Crisis Intervention, and Incident Reporting

Graduates will be ready for entry-level positions as Direct Support Professionals, including: Community Habilitation Specialist, Job Coach, Community Support Worker, and more.
